Fire Wipes Out 'Lost Colony' Costumes

Manteo — Fire destroyed almost all of the Lost Colony theater’s costumes early Tuesday as it burned through the Irene Rains Costume Shop and a maintenance shed, the theater said.

The performance area and seating were undamaged.

Except for some costumes that were being dry-cleaned and others that had been sent to the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh for an exhibition, all the costumes were lost, including those for the characters of colonists and Native Americans.

Rains and then Fred Voelpel had made the costumes from the 1940s through the early 1980s, the Lost Colony said in a statement.

In 1947, a fire destroyed most of the props and sets at the theater, the organization said, but Rains saved the costumes that time by quickly taking them from dressing rooms to the beach.

WWE is Having a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week

Today, while watching CNN, the report of Chris Benoit's autopsy finally came out and they believe he suffered from severe brain damage.

The tests, conducted by Julian Bailes of the Sports Legacy Institute, show that Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient.

Bailes and his research team say that this damage was the result of a lifetime of chronic concussions and head trauma suffered while Benoit was in the wrestling ring.

This could extinguish the idea that the murder/suicide was actually a result of "roid rage" if it turns out to be correct. In case you didn't already know, Benoit murdered his wife and son before hanging himself in his home.

Speaking of "roid rage" and the WWE, it has come to light in the last week or so that 10, maybe more, wrestlers have been suspended for steroid use but they haven't released just who it is yet. However, if you're a wrestling fan, you just might be able to put some of the story line clues together and figure it out.

Over the weekend, WWE taped its Monday Night Raw, ECW and Smackdown television shows in preparation for a tour of South Africa this week. Following the earlier reports, there were some curious happenings.

On Monday Night Raw, Umaga lost the intercontinental title to Jeff Hardy. He later was beaten and bloodied by Triple H and taken out on a stretcher.

On that same show, John Cena attacked William Regal, who was later checked out by paramedics and replaced as Raw commissioner by Jonathan Coachman.

In the final segment of the show, it was revealed that Mr. Kennedy is not the illegitimate son of WWE boss Vince McMahon. For weeks, the plan had been that Kennedy would fill that role and be involved in the biggest story line of his career.

On ECW, champion John Morrison lost his title to CM Punk.

During the taping of WWE Smackdown, Chavo Guerrero lost an "I Quit'' match to Rey Mysterio after having his knee smashed with a steel chair. Mysterio had the same thing done to him by Guerrero in a match last year to explain a long absence, during which he had knee surgery.

In other news, the company also cut ties to Bucci, who formerly wrestled in the WWE under the name Simon Dean before taking a management position.

Smackdown wrestler Eugene (Nick Dinsmore) was given his release from the company over the weekend. His name did not come up as part of the federal investigation.

Members of the tag-team Cryme Tyme, which consisted of Shad Gaspard and JTG (Jayson Paul), also were given their release -- because of behavioral issues.

I was browsing through postsecret.com last night when a question occurred to me. If someone close to you, say a significant other, saw you looking through Post Secret or their book and said "Y'know, I had a secret published in that.", how would you react? Would you flip through the entire book and/or website desperately seeking out the secret and try to figure out which one it was?

Me? I guess it really depends on who it is. I can see myself looking for a few minutes and then getting bored with it and then begging to know which one it is, to no avail I'm sure, and then just calling it quits. But I can guarantee it would drive me crazy for at least a day.

That or I'd say "Oh yeah? Me too!" and see how they react, whether it was true or not.

TOKYO — A Japanese prison is scrambling to eradicate marijuana plants that keep sprouting up on its exercise ground, officials said Tuesday.

The marijuana plants started sprouting at Abashiri Prison on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido about a year ago, said prison official Takeshi Okamura. He said officials plucked out as many as 300 marijuana plants and treated the ground last year, but several more sprouted again this year.

Prisoners reported them to the guards.

Officials believe the plants are wild.

"Apparently, somebody knew how to tell marijuana from other plants," Okamura said.

Local botanical experts concluded the marijuana seeds were inadvertently brought in with the soil used for the exercise ground, Okamura said.

"It's a headache," Okamura said. "This isn't a farm."

Abashiri Prison, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Tokyo, currently has about 1,080 male inmates serving terms of up to eight years in prison.

Sad Day for the WWE

Being down here in the OBX for the summer means that I tend to get news a day late. I woke up this morning to CNN telling me that the wrestler, Benoit, and his family have passed away and they believe it to have been a murder/suicide. I am, admittedly, a big WWE fan. The boy and I watch it all the time (though not as much as we'd like down here without our tivo and working at 8 every night) and we're both pretty crushed to hear the news.

Looking up the story online, apparently the situation is pretty "bizarre" and the police believe we'll be shocked to hear the results when they do eventually let them out to the public. It seems pretty apparent to them that the crippler went crazy, saying the evidence points to Benoit having killed his wife, 7 year old son and then himself.

Last night, during the Monday Night Raw time slot, Vince McMahon gave up his fake death story line in order to pay tribute to the career of Chris Benoit. They also cancelled the event all together, turning people away at the door. McMahon opened the show with this:

Good evening. Tonight this arena here in Corpus Christi, Texas would have been filled to capacity with enthousiatic WWE fans. Tonight's storyline was to have been the alleged demise of my character, Mr. McMahon. However, in reality, WWE superstar Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and their son Daniel are dead. Their bodies were discovered this afternoon in their new, suburban, Atlanta home. The athourities are undergoing an investigation. We here in the WWE can only offer our condolences to the extended family of Chris Bennoit. And the only other thing we can do at this moment is, tonight, pay tribute to Chris Benoit. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are being asked to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies' pockets for just one day. So please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

Many New Jersey residents watching the Disney Channel Tuesday morning were outraged after the family-friendly programming turned into a pornographic display.

Jennie Sherman still can't believe what happened while she was watching the show "Handy Manny" with her two twin sons.

Wait...Handy Manny? Seriously? I mean, should parents really trust a show called Handy Manny in the first place?

"We were just sitting here and the screen just froze and then all of a sudden I saw very graphic pornography on the television and I scrambled to get the remote to shut it off," Sherman told WCBS-TV in New York City..

Sherman said she immediately recorded the X-rated graphic video on her DVR. She then e-mailed wcbstv.com to report the shocking news.

I wonder if she still has the recording. You know, for safe keeping.

Arnd Drossel, during his "220-mile roll through the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia to raise money for, and awareness about, psychiatric patients", stopped by the zoo for a little getting-to-know-you with the tigers there. He claims the steel ball he created and built himself was plenty strong enough to keep him safe from the felines as they expressed their curiosity. The ball is "250 high-grade steel strands welded into something resembling a massive ball of wool".

'I set about thinking of a way to publicise those who need pyschiatric help and came up with this.
'Basically, the whole concept is about finding the courage to do something and inspire courage in those who have lost their confidence along with much else.'
Psychiatric patients from clinics in the region helped him create the rolling globe and some were present to see Drossel roll into the tiger enclosure.

It's not very often that something seemingly lazy is created but in the end actually promotes more exercise. This has got to be one of the coolest things I've seen actually. A very handy (and fun!) way to get up a tough hill on your bike and at 2 meters per second, it's a quick little contraption. IMUS fired

Yesterday when I was just about to leave for work, the news came on and reported that Imus had been fired from his radio show completely. I, for one, am pretty pissed off about the whole thing.

Don't get me wrong. What Imus said was offensive and wrong and an apology was absolutely necessary. However, I can't help but wonder why he's being held up as an example in a world where our music, radio, television and film is inundated with terms just as nasty as the one he chose. I get that it's more about the victim in this case, an innocent and extremely hard working group of girls on the Rutgers basketball team, but does this mean we're saying it's okay to say these things so long as it's a generalized statement towards a particular race or sex and not a particular group of people/person?

My question is simply this; when musicians use women as objects and advocate violence and drugs in their music, when comedians make racist jokes and when movies and television tell us stories about racism and sexism, why have we chosen Imus as an example for all of this? Are we allowing certain people to say things and others not to? Are we saying "nappy headed hos" is not okay, unless it's said by or about someone else?

If we're going to hold him responsible for these words, then it's time we start holding everyone responsible. We can't pick and choose who gets to get away with these kind of statements. Either we confront them all or we exercise our right to choose who we listen to and who we don't and let the whole matter go. I mean, can we really have it both ways? Isn't that contradictory? Hypocritical?

I should tell you that I am a firm believer in freedom of speech and I don't believe in censorship. However, I do understand that in a case like this, it is up to the broadcaster to decide what they do and don't air. I understand that CBS and MSNBC are the deciders of what can and can not be said on their shows and I'm okay with that. It is their right just as much as it's my right to not watch them if I don't agree with their standards. My beef lies with the people who fought so strongly against him and his words, demanding his job be taken away and the media who made such a fuss for everyone involved, including the amazing basketball team who's shining moment was shadowed by this total mess.

The Ad Council gives the younger minds of the interwebs some food for thought in this short PSA. It aims to teach the teen aged myspacers of the world that posting your photo is a one way ticket to janitor pedophilia.

To be honest, at first I thought it was a pretty clever little ad. Then I started reading comments on the video and couldnt stop giggling.

For those of you who don't already know, a myspacer, who went by the name of 'J', went on a hunger strike in protest of Sanjaya's continuing success on American Idol. Needless to say, she didn't receive the warmest response from the general public. Check out the Starvation For Sanjaya myspace to view her youtube and also the multitude of hilarious comments on the subject.

After claiming to have gone 16 days without food, her doctor finally told her she needed to start eating. Don't worry though! She seems to be forming a new anti-Sanjaya strategy and will be unveiling it shortly. Until then, she's just going to have to go about it the old fashioned way and vote!

30 year old woman poses as 17 year old boy

I am genuinely at a loss for words here. I'm trying to formulate some kind of opinion or thought on this news story but I'm coming up blank. Shock? Confusion? Am I amused? A picture would have been worth 1000 words in this case. I am dying to know what this woman looked like, enabling her to pass as a 17 year old boy. One can only imagine.

Yes, it is safe to assume that since this is a news story, she was caught, nearly a year after she began the ruse.

EVERETT - An Everett woman who posed as a teenage boy was arrested Sunday for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl who believed the older woman was her boyfriend.

Lorelei Josephine Corpuz, 30, lived for more than a year as a 17-year-old boy named "Mark," according to papers filed in Everett District Court.

As "Mark," Corpuz persuaded the girl's family to let "Mark" live in their home as the girl's boyfriend. Corpuz claimed to be an orphan, police alleged.

Zombie's walk. You want proof? Just check out ZombiesDontRun.com. The boy and I debate about this nightly. Why on a nightly basis? Because some form of zombie film is being played every day of the week on one of the plethora (yes, I know what that is) of movie channels we subscribe to and he will watch them over and over and over again. He loves to flip through the channel guide and find one just so he can holler at me that it's on.

That's not what I've come to share with you though. Turns out, there was a special event this past Sunday called the Brisbane Zombie Walk and I for one am fascinated and a little bit jealous. *Note that it is, in fact, called a WALK* Turns out they're not the only ones either. Ottawa and Toronto seem to have started the trend and that is apparently where Brisbane got the idea.

The boy and I love Penn and Teller's Bullshit on Showtime. It's by far one of our favorite series on television and an excellent conversation starter. Last night's latest episode was about the Bullshit of Anti-Walmart activists and the like. One particular scene left us laughing almost as much as watching poor Michelle take that hilarious dive on Survivor.

Did you miss that one? Because that had us cracking up straight into the next commercial break.

Yep, I still giggle every time.

Baldwin was so moved by a March 4 New York Times story about Pvt. Resha Kane's last day with family and friends before going for training to prepare for serving in Iraq that he not his people tracked down Kane's mother at a discount store where she works to offer his assistance, his spokesman said.

"I didn't know what to say," Kane said. "And then I asked him if he could send me his autograph. I've never met a star, let alone talked to one on the phone."

My fella is really great about picking stuff up at the store for me, but I learned a lesson yesterday...if he hasn't seen me buy it myself yet, best that I do it first or at the very least be more specific.

It was a fairly simple request, a bottle of saline nasal spray. MUST BE SALINE is the only rule I gave him. I'm terrified of becoming addicted to the other stuff. Mostly because, well, how embarassing. I can just picture myself hiding in dark alleys trying to get my spray fix. Anyhow, I did not realize they came in different sizes other than those tiny little 2" high bottles. I should have known. Most of all I should have known that he, of all people, would be able to find this.

When he presented this air-horn size can to me, I believe my mouth dropped to the floor. I am certain that I questioned it actually being any kind of nasal spray. However, the best reaction was his confusion over my confusion. As if everyone buys aerosol cans of saline spray the size of your hand and whips them out on the subway for a quick nasal passage cleansing.

Mom sez: "Better not ask him to pick up tampons. "

I have noted that since the can came into our lives, my nose has been perfectly breathable. It is clearly afraid...very very afraid.

Another model bites the dust last night on America's Next Top Model. We waved good-bye to plus sized model Diana who was booted out of the competition for her lack of passion. I, for one, completely agreed with the decision and was getting really tired of listening to her.

She dug her own grave when Jay asked her "Why do you want to be America's Next Top Model?"

Her response..."Just cuz."

So one plus size model down...one to go. It is clear, atleast at this point, that neither of them are/were going to make it. The competition is pretty "fierce" this season with favorites like Jaslene and, shockingly, Natasha who really upped her game last night while posing as a "hip-hop boy."

We have clearly seen a change in this young fella's attitude. In the first few weeks he showed physical signs of shock and awe when he snuck through to the next round. Now the poor boy is clearly letting it get to his....hair? His cockiness is growing and he responds to his popularity with smiles and smirks. What kind of man are you turning him into? You should be ashamed of yourselves! Or proud, I havent decided yet.

All I am certain of is that he doesn't belong there and yet I can't stop watching him. Ive never been so excited to watch the elimination shows.
